Today we spent the day snorkeling at multiple destinations! We went to Hot Chan Marine Reserve to snorkel. This is Mayan for "Little Channel". It is a sanctuary on the reefs that was created in 1987 to protect fish and wildlife. They have done an excellent job! We visited Shark Ray Alley and say SO MANY sharks! Although we may have suffered a burn or two, I promise that your kids all applied sun screen...a LOT! The sun is hot and we were in the water all day!
Here is what we saw:
Nurse Sharks
Sting Rays
Starfish
Coral
Baracudas
Eels
Sea Turtles
and SO MANY other schools of fish!
The only thing that we didn't see is a manatee (we went to the passage where they feed, but it just wasn't our day for them)...and Nemo is still lost! We may of had sea legs, sunburns and a bit of motion sickness, but we also overcame anxiety, had a great workout and saw a ton of wonderful things for the first time! They say that the cures to many different diseases are located in the oceans, maybe one day some of my students will find them!
Note: We have videos of sea turtles, sharks and sting rays that will be uploaded once we are stateside and have a stronger signal! :) I will let you know when they are available! They are really great! The kids tried free diving and really got a workout with this activity!
Our hotel on the island is beautiful and full of entertainment for the kids! They went down a slide, zip lined into the water, jumped on a trampoline and more in the evenings after dinner.
