New York City: Students Going Global 2018 - Day 3 (5/22/2018)

New York City: Students Going Global 2018 - Day 3

Day 3 was a day of “seeing”! We saw SO MuCH!!!!
We started the day with a bit of rain, but that didn't stop us from enjoying our Harlem walking tour. The students were able to witness art, and so many various types of architecture as they traveled throughout this area of the city. They also learned a valuable lesson about what a payphone “was”! What a wonderful afternoon and that’s not all!

One of the most historically recognizable places to visit Harlem is the Apollo Theater! Many students knew of the theater, but didn't quite understand it's significance. They scanned the street for names they recognized and then set off to see many murals before indulging in some soul food!

Dinner this evening was at Sylvia's Diner! This place is well known for it's wonderful soul food and history in Harlem! It was so yummy! They students tried chicken and waffles, collard greens, and cornbread, just to name a few.

Now for the late afternoon...after lunch we did the following:
- Subway Navigation/Ride (A first time experience for 15 of my kids!)
-Visited Greenwich Village (Homes of many of the rich and famous and beautiful architecture!)
- Stopped at Stonewall Inn (The birthplace of the PRIDE Movement) and discussed diversity.
- Visited a previous fire station, now the home of Anderson Cooper

(His boyfriend said hello through the window!)
-Stood on the steps of Edgar Allen Poe’s NYC home.
- Visited the site of the first reading of The Raven.
- Listened to several ghost stories of NYC
- Sat next to the oldest tree in NYC
- Visited the Washington Monument from many movies including the Avenger’s movie
- Washington Park Burial - During the times of Yellow Fever many people were buried here.
- The “Jessie” apartment and the Will Smith apartment from I Am Legend
- Ate NYC hotdogs
- Stage Coach house of Hamilton
And even more I’m probably forgetting...

Last but not least, you can't visit New York City without taking in a Broadway show! I was a littler nervous when I learned that they show we were going to see was Anastasia. I was worried that it might be to "girly" for members of my group or that it might be too...who knows? It was WONDERFUL! The singing and acting was incredible, my students looked wonderful in their dress up outfits and I had several students crying at the end! What a wonderful show!?!? I would love to see all shows on Broadway after this experience! The show, combined with NYC pizza from John's Pizzeria, was definitely a night to remember!
