New York City: Students Going Global 2018 - Day 4 (5/23/2018)

New York City: Students Going Global 2018 - Day 4
Today is our final day in New York City! The morning started off really well with breakfast, group chat and bus photos! Meet my group and their bus buddies!

Support on these tours is SO important! I receive support from our tour guides, our bus drivers and especially my husband! He not only brings up the caboose, but he is always willing to help on tour whenever he is needed. He has don't this a few times now and he is starting to see things even before I do! I love this guy!

We headed off to our last day in NYC! Our hotel was in New Jersey so each day we crossed through tunnels to enter the city. The border of New York and New Jersey is actually crossed in the tunnels! You can see the line of the border in the picture below. It is cheaper and safer for groups to stay on the New Jersey side of the line, rather than downtown NYC for their tours, so each day we made the morning drive by bus.

After another drive throughout NYC, we stopped for our morning tour in Spanish Harlem. We had a guide show us around the streets full of street art and latin rhythms. We learned about the influence of the Puerto Rican community as well as the Cuban communities of New York. The students also learned about the differences and similarities between Harlem and Spanish Harlem. We saw murals of Frida Kahlo and more and then found ourselves eating lunch in the north end of Central Park. What a wonderful way to end our last day before heading to the airport!

Below you will find a wonderful mural dedicated to the street art of Harlem.

Fun with friends and nature in the beautiful Central Park!

When we arrived safely back in Wichita, I made them pose for a few more photos! I really enjoyed getting to spend the last four days with these kids in New York City! We learned a lot about the city, about our nation, about the cultures of our nation, and about each other. Learning never stops. I hope that the students you see in the pictures below, continue to learn, explore and question the world around them! There is so much they still have to learn!

This trip was the first trip that I have taken that included Junior Counselors. Makayla Hillman and Emory Ast are two students who are in college and a junior in high school respectively. They have traveled on tours with me in the past and wanted to come along with my younger students on this trip as well! They were great role models and sounding boards for my students! I hope to have some of my current 8th graders follow in their footsteps.
I'd also like to give a huge shoutout to the parents of these kiddos. It takes a lot to allow your child to go across the country with someone outside of your family. Thank you for trusting me with your children and providing them an experience that we will all never forget!

I LOVE MY JOB! #LearningNeverStops #EmpathyisEverything
